The primary objective of this position is to assist the WASH engineer under direct supervision. The Hygiene Promotion Assistant is tasked with facilitating the execution of hygiene promotion and water supply initiatives through the utilization of effective hygiene promotion methodologies while adhering to established standards, and principles, and encouraging community involvement.

 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Training Module Enhancement: Collaborate on the development and modification of training modules to promote hygiene practices within households and communities.
  • Community Outreach: Engage in door-to-door visits and community assessments to pinpoint deficiencies in hygiene, sanitation, and water utilization.
  • Awareness Campaign Coordination: Organize and execute awareness-raising sessions focused on hygiene promotion.
  • Community Mobilization: Rally communities to embrace safe hygiene practices advocated by the project, encompassing both individual and communal hygiene.
  • Training Facilitation: Assist in delivering training sessions for community members and Community Health Volunteers (CHVs).
  • Focus Group Discussions: Conduct discussions with women and girls to identify suitable locations for constructing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities.
  • Reporting: Regularly compile and submit comprehensive weekly activity reports.
  • Beneficiary Selection Support: Aid in the selection process of beneficiaries for Non-Food Items (NFIs) distribution.
  • Beneficiary Registration: Assist in the registration of beneficiaries.
  • Distribution Coordination: Contribute to the efficient distribution of hygiene and other WASH-related toolkits to eligible beneficiaries.
  • Monitoring Visits: Conduct periodic visits to observe CHVs' awareness sessions, ensuring quality and consistency.

Specific Responsibilities:

Ensure Timely and Efficient Project Activity Monitoring:

Oversee and manage the monitoring of project activities to ensure they are carried out promptly and effectively.


Conduct Comprehensive Needs Assessments:

Perform in-depth needs assessments in the targeted areas, particularly in relation to WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) issues, to inform future interventions.


Identify Indigenous Opportunities for Innovation:

Utilize community-based knowledge to identify opportunities for innovative initiatives. Provide written recommendations for new WASH projects and proposals.


Support Diverse Relief and Rehabilitation Efforts:

Collaborate in the planning and execution of various relief and rehabilitation initiatives, including livelihoods, education, shelter, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and emergency preparedness.


Foster Collaborative Partnerships:

Work closely with key stakeholders, including government authorities, community leaders, beneficiaries, and other emergency relief and early recovery providers, to ensure effective coordination and collaboration.


Fulfill Additional Assignments:

Undertake any other tasks as assigned by your Supervisor or Senior Management.

 

Work Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Hygiene Promotion Expertise: Proficient in hygiene promotion within both local community and emergency settings.
  • Community Mobilization and NFI Distribution: Demonstrated experience in community mobilization and non-food item (NFI) distribution.
  • Effective Communication: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, facilitating effective collaboration within teams and with diverse stakeholders.
  • Autonomous Work: Capability to work both collaboratively as part of a team and autonomously when necessary.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluent in both spoken and written English, as well as the local language of Zamfara.
  • Conceptual Tools: Familiarity with conceptual tools such as the logical framework is advantageous.
  • Tech Savvy: Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio) and web conferencing tools.
  • INGO/NGO Experience: Prior experience working with international or non-governmental organizations (INGOs/NGOs) is highly preferred.
  • Ethical Standards: Adheres to recognized professional and organizational codes of ethics, demonstrating ethical conduct at all times.
  • Pressure Handling: Effectively performs under pressure, showing sensitivity to local cultures and adapting as needed.
